about

SOME CALLED IT A 1,000 YEAR FLOOD. Heavy, unrelenting rains drenched Colorado’s Front Range for a solid week. Torrents of runoff gushed down mountainsides and canyons funneling unprecedented floodwaters into foothill towns. On September 12, 2013, many were woken by flood sirens and evacuated in the middle of the night to seek higher ground. Unstoppable, the flooding progressed downstream spreading onto the prairie, submerging large tracts of farmland, pastures and more communities.

When the waters subsided, there were over 1,700 homes destroyed, 17,500 homes damaged, 950 businesses damaged or destroyed, 200 miles of road washed away, 50 bridges damaged or destroyed, 10,000 people displaced, and 10 confirmed fatalities.

After days of scouring online footage of the devastation just miles away, “Rise” was written on Sept.16 and recording began only two days later. Friends and fellow musicians from the Planet Bluegrass Folks Festival and Song School (whose grounds were also completely inundated) contributed tracks from across the country. Guest performers include: Kai Welch (Abigail Washburn), Tim Burlingame (Sweet Talk Radio), Megan Burtt, and Danya River.

Following such an historic catastrophe, communities are binding together stronger than ever to rise out of the deluge to reclaim and rebuild their lives. This song is for them. Rise...Rise…Rise

LYRICS:
September 12th, 2am
Rain's been coming down for days and the river's risin'
Sirens call, gotta get out of town

A friend and his wife, his old guitar
They grabbed what they could, threw it in the car
The road was washing out up the canyon

It's a state of mind to help those that you love
Seeing all that river ripped apart, push came to shove
Time's running out...run

He said, "Some of the neighbors, stubborn as a mule
Gonna ride it out, up on the butte
but there's no getting 'round, the highway's gone"

Like nothing they've ever seen before, cars floating by
The river ran down main street, they didn't get far
It took so much not to give up anymore

So they waited for the chinooks up on higher ground
at daybreak, airlifted over what's left of the town

It feels so helpless on the outside looking in
Like watching a surgeon recklessly cutting in
To someone you love

Now the water's fanning out across the flood plain
River's changing course through farms and open range
This land may never ever be the same
But sister and brother, we will lift up one another
Whatever it takes to rise once again
Rise...Rise...Rise
